Every year Thai Poosam, or ‘Day of Light’ falls on the full moon in the Tamil month of “Thai”, January-February. This year Thai Poosam falls on January 29th in North America and January 30th in India, on the “Poosam” Nakshatra day.
“Poosam” or “Pushya” is considered by many to be the most auspicious star for spiritual development. Pushya means “nurture” and is in the sign Cancer owned by the Moon, the Mother. The deity associated with Pushya is also Brihaspati, the ‘Guru’ or teacher and so it has a property of enlightening spiritual growth. This is a time for ascension from a material to pure spiritual domain. It is one of the best opportunities to enhance our thought patterns so that we are holistically much better than before. Thai Poosam commemorates the Birthday of Lord Muruga, the event when Lord Muruga was gifted the ‘vel’ by his mother Parvati, and the ascension of the great saint Swami Ramalingam. |

The Sanskrit term ‘Shakti’ means ‘power’. There is a supreme power behind this universe that is expressed in many varied ways. Heat, light, lightning – all these are expressions of just that power.
Shakti is the creator of the universe. The universe is her form. She is the foundation of the world and forms of the body. Shakti is the form of all things that live and move in the world. As the whole world is under the influences of these energies, every human possesses these 3 Shaktis or powers: 1. Itcha Shakti is the will power, the desire or motivation which relates to the Mind. |
From January 14th, the Sun begins its journey northward as it transits into the constellation of Capricorn, signaling the end of darkness and the return of ever increasing daylight through July 16th.
In astrological terms, it is the Vedic Winter Solstice and in India it is referred to as “Pongal”. The transit is a powerful opportunity to change your old ways and rewrite the rules for the next year. Your old ways might not have brought you the affluence or poignant happiness that you have been yearning for. The celebrations associated with this transit carry a strong vibration which can stir up your awareness and help you receive what you rightly deserve. The morning of January 13th prior to the transit is the time to clean your homes and your mind. Run through your closets and throw out old items from the past that no longer has a place in your life. Spiritually this is the time to overhaul of your current self and getting ready for a higher self. This festival celebrates leaving behind the old way of doing things, be it relationship, money matters or health habits. |
