In Vedic terms, Pongal referred as the Vedic winter solstice in west is the period when the Sun God begins its journey northward as it transits into the constellation of Capricorn. It signals the end of darkness and the return of the Sun God with ever increasing daylight. This is considered to be the auspicious period to offer prayers and Poojas to receive the blessings from the glorious Sun God and to rewrite the rules for the year 2012.

The Harvest Festival of India – Pongal

Pongal, the harvest festival of India is celebrated to thank God for the good harvest produced during the year. On Pongal, people drive away all the bad memories of the past year by burning their old items and looking forward for a new beginning.

Pongal 2012 is quite significant because of the transit in which Sun enters Capricorn on Jan 15th. This transit is a powerful opportunity to change your old ways and rewrite the rules for the next year. You will be amazed to know that even Indra, the king of heaven, rejoices during this time of abundance, fun, luxury and happiness.

  • January 14th – Bogi Festival: On the morning of January 14th, prior to the transit, is a time to clean your homes and your mind. Spiritually this means an overhaul of your current self and getting ready for a higher self.
  • January 15th – Pongal: Sun Enters Capricorn and winter comes to an end.
  • January 16th – Mattu Pongal/Cow Pongal: Pongal usually being the Harvest Festival of India is traditionally a time to celebrate the harvest and share the yield. People, cows, ants and crows are all well fed and their part in the big eco wheel is acknowledged.
  • January 17th – Kaanum Pongal: A time to gather along with family and rejuvenate yourself!

Sun Enters Capricorn

January 15th, (Sunday) is the day when the Sun enters the sign Capricorn. Winter comes to an end and there is a gradual onset of sunny days. Sun when enters the sign Capricorn marks the dawn of positive signs. It is said in puranas that the gates of Heaven will be open for 6 months from now onwards.

From this day onwards, Sun takes the northward movement. The North is the direction of Kubera. So this is the time when Sun steers its governance towards prosperity. People offer their prayers to Lord Sun as a token of Gratitude for his light and the energy he gives for all living beings including the plant kingdom.

Thai Pongal, the harvest festival of Tamil Nadu falls in mid January after the winter solstice. It marks the auspicious beginning of Uttarayana, which marks the sun’s movement northwards for a period of six months. This celestial occasion is celebrated as Pongal. Most of the important events are scheduled to perform during this period as it is very auspicious.

Thai Pongal is celebrated for 4 days that signals the end of traditional farming season. It also marks a beginning for a series of festivals.Thai Pongal – Harvest festival of Tamil Nadu is also referred to as Vedic Winter Solstice in the west. This year’s four day celebrations begins from January 14th to January 17th. People usually offer their prayers to Gods and Goddesses during these days to make the upcoming year a favorable one for them.
